22nd March 2024

Headteacher welcome

Hello and welcome to the latest newsletter of this academic year. As we approach the Easter break, I wanted to share with you some of the great things that have been taking place over the last few weeks.
The Legacy Ladder has been in full action this term with many trips, visits and speakers coming into school. We again were visited by a group of students and teachers from a secondary school in Japan. They presented to our students on Japanese culture, hobbies and interesting things about their country, as well as giving an opportunity to play some traditional Japanese games. Years 9 and 10 were given a talk by Jeanette Marx, a speaker on behalf of Generation to Generation, to talk about her mother’s experiences during the Holocaust. Year 11 Geography students also completed their field trip this half term. This is the compulsory element of their course where they are required to investigate the influence of urban regeneration. The Ten Tors training is also in full swing, with students training and developing their fitness and navigation skills, as well as experiencing all the weather on offer during their practice walks and camping expeditions.

The college competition has really kicked on again over the last few months, with great competition between the colleges, especially with the Fun Friday challenges and activities. The prize this term for the winning college was an ice cream van, which went to Dowty college. It was the closest final few weeks that we have ever had, so a massive well done to Hill, Holst and Jenner for their efforts.

There have been many sporting fixtures across a variety of sports over the last few months, but a particular shoutout must go to our Year 8 and 9 Girls Football team who have consistently been working hard and doing the best they possibly can do in all matches. This has paid off and last week they were awarded County Cup Champions. An amazing achievement!

Our Year 11 students have had their second set of Pre-Public Examinations (mock exams) over the last few weeks. They have worked really hard and are starting to see that all their dedication and efforts are really starting to pay off. Many of our Year 11 students are coming in for some of the Revision Conferences over the Easter break, as well as preparing for their upcoming GCSE exams which start shortly after Easter. I wish them all the best of luck in this final hurdle.

We are really pleased to have been able to make a donation of Easter eggs to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital. A huge amount were collected which will make such a difference to some young people this Easter.

Next half term is a really important one as it sees the start of the Year 11 GCSE Summer exam series which begins on the 2nd May. We wish them all the success in the world. Year 11 - you have got this. We also see our next annual school production. This year we are excited to present 'The Addams Family'. We have two performances of this on the 24th and 25th April. Tickets are on sale now.

Finally, I would just like to say thank you as always to all the staff, students and parents/carers for all their support and commitment to the school, it is really appreciated.
I wish all our students, staff and their families a safe and happy break. We look forward to welcoming all students back on Monday 8th April.

Mr Derry,  Headteacher

Star Student: Nominated by their Head of Year

Year 7: Jacob L
This term’s Year 7 Star Student is Jacob L. Jacob consistently shows Respect in everything he does. He is patient and kind to his classmates. He also listens to others’ opinions and uses this to reflect on his own thoughts, adapting as he learns more. Jacob shows a great amount of dedication to his learning, regularly showing great amounts of Ambition and Determination. Jacob is a testament to Henley Bank, and has rightfully earned his place at the top Praise Point earner in Year 7 this term. His Confidence has grown greatly since he joined us. I look forward to seeing him continue to grow and thrive at Henley Bank.

Year 8: Kodi H

This term’s Year 8 Star Student is Kodi. Kodi has shown great growth in his Character this year. He regularly goes out of his way to push himself in his lessons, showing huge amounts of Determination. Kodi is also very welcoming and kind, showing Respect to his peers. His Respect for others led him to being awarded the first Respect Star of the Week this term, a true testament to his Character. Kodi’s dedication to improving himself has led to him being one of the top Praise Point earners in Year 8 this term. He has thoroughly earnt this title this term. I cannot wait to see what the future holds for Kodi.

Year 9: Nia I

Nia has stood out this term with her fantastic attitude to learning, this work ethic is one of the leading reasons why she is one of the top students for praise points in Year 9. Nia's commitment reaches out of lessons as well being one of the key players in Henley Bank's U14 football squad. Showing her leadership, determination and being a role model for the younger players, it's no wonder the team became county champions. Nia has all the qualities to be a very successful Henley Bank student, I can't wait to see what else she can achieve. Keep it up!

Year 10: Theo R
Theo is being recognised as Year 10's star of this half term.  Theo's attendance and work ethic have been exceptional throughout Year 10 and his response to his assessments and the feedback has been outstanding.  If he continues with the same attitudes to learning he will excel, not only in his GCSEs, but also in whatever he chooses to do when he leaves us at Henley Bank.  In addition to working hard, Theo has acquired praise points across all of our core values during this academic year, displaying a desire to improve his whole character, not just his academics.  Theo has also done an amazing job in preparing to represent the school in the up-coming 10 Tors event on Dartmoor. Well done Theo.

Year 11:  Blake D

Blake is my star student in Year 11 this term. It is with great pleasure and admiration that I recognise Blake for his outstanding contributions to our school community and his exemplary personal values.

Blake is not only an exceptional student academically but also embodies qualities of kindness, politeness, and dedication that set him apart. His unwavering commitment to his studies, coupled with his respectful demeanour and eagerness to learn, make him a joy to teach and a role model for his peers.

Throughout his time at Henley Bank, Blake has consistently demonstrated a strong work ethic and a genuine passion for learning. He approaches every task with enthusiasm and determination, always striving for excellence in everything he does. His positive attitude and willingness to go above and beyond expectations make him a standout student in our Year 11 cohort.

Moreover, Blake's kindness and empathy towards others have not gone unnoticed. He consistently shows consideration and compassion towards his peers and teachers, creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment for all. His exemplary behaviour and positive interactions with others reflect his exceptional character and leadership qualities.

It is evident that Blake has a bright future ahead of him, both academically and personally. With his strong personal values, dedication to excellence, and genuine kindness towards others, he is poised for success in whatever path he chooses to pursue.

Messages from our Heads of Year:

Year 7

Year 7 have continued to settle in and grow at Henley Bank this term. Year 7 are showing great Confidence at school. They have continued to make new friends and try new Co-Curricular Clubs. They are taking on new challenges in their stride. This term we have been working on our value of Ambition, with particular challenges of pushing ourselves out of our comfort zones and trialling new hobbies or skills. It has been great to see Year 7 taking on these challenges, and seeing an increase in their Praise Points for Ambition shows how much Year 7 have embraced these new challenges.
A highlight of this term was when Year 7 had the privilege of taking part in activities put on by school students visiting from Japan. These activities highlighted some Japanese traditions, giving our students some insight into different cultures. I am so proud of the Respect and Confidence Year 7 showed in their conversations with our visitors, along with the enthusiasm with which they took part in the activities.
Year 7, I hope you all have a fantastic half term, and I look forward to seeing you in the new term.

Year 8

Year 8 have continued to grow and thrive this term. We have been working on our value of Respect, focusing in particular on empathy and listening to others. It has been lovely to see so many of them taking on these messages. Reading the nominations for Year 8 Respect Star of the Week each week has been heart-warming, and hearing an increase in ‘thank you’ and ‘how are you?’ has been incredible. They have almost doubled the number of Praise Points they have for Respect this term, a true showcase of them embracing their challenges.
A huge highlight of this term for Year 8 was the girls’ stellar representation of Henley Bank at the under 14s County Championship, securing the victory and bringing home the trophy. The Ambition and Respect this team has shown has been inspirational. They have become true role models for the girls’ football at Henley Bank. Well done!
Year 8, I hope you have a wonderful, restful break. I look forward to seeing you in the new term.

Year 9

Another short half term completed but so many events, opportunities and progression rolled into one! All of our expedition students have been busy with Ten Tors and The Duke of Edinburgh, testing their limits, overcoming challenges and creating fantastic memories along the way. Our U14 football team became county champions ranking 1st out of 70 schools, an incredible achievement and becoming phenomenal role models for all sports teams across Henley Bank. Henley Bank was also host to a number of Japanese students observing secondary school life in England with a number of Year 9 students showcasing their confidence by being tour guides, giving them a fantastic insight into English schooling. Rounding off the term was the finalising of Year 9 Options, which has been amazing seeing students taking such an interest in potential career paths and exploring new subjects. Another great term for Year 9 and another term doing themselves and Henley Bank proud.

Year 10

Year 10s have had a very busy start to 2024, building on the excellent start they made to Key Stage 4 in the Autumn term.  In January, we began the year experiencing Henley Bank's first Careers week with all of our students having the opportunity of hearing from various employers, visiting universities and attending workshops aimed at preparing the students for life post-16.  More recently we had a visit and talk from the family of a Holocaust survivor to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.   For many, they have had their first taste of formal assessments through their BTEC subjects.  Although we won't know the results of these for several weeks yet, we are very pleased with the way the vast majority applied themselves to their work and will enjoy sharing their successes with them in due course. In addition to focussing on their studies, our Year 10s have continued to be very active in the wider life of the school, practicing hard for the school production, taking a wide variety of music lessons, participating in the Duke of Edinburgh programme and preparing to participate in the very demanding 10 Tors event on Dartmoor; as we move into the summer terms, we look forward to their hard work and dedication paying off.

Year 11

This year, our Year 11 cohort has truly thrived, showcasing unparalleled determination, creativity, respect, confidence, and ambition. They have embraced challenges with resilience and have continually exceeded expectations in every aspect of their academic journey.

One of the most remarkable aspects of this year group is their unprecedented access to the Year 11 offer. They have engaged with Period 6's, Champions Hours, Revision Tasks and Working Lunch like no other year group before them. This dedication to broadening their horizons and seizing every opportunity speaks volumes about their commitment to personal and academic development.

Moreover, our students have demonstrated exceptional academic maturity, consistently applying themselves to their studies with diligence and focus. Their performance in the Pre-Public Examinations (PPE) window has been nothing short of exemplary, with many students surpassing expectations and achieving outstanding results. It is evident that their hard work, dedication, and resilience have paid off, setting a standard of excellence for future cohorts to aspire to.

Beyond academic achievements, our Year 11 students have also shown remarkable growth in character and leadership. They have embraced challenges with a positive attitude, supported one another with empathy and kindness, and contributed positively to the school community. Their unwavering commitment to upholding our school values and fostering a culture of inclusivity and respect is truly commendable.

As we approach the final stretch of the academic year, I have every confidence that our Year 11 students will continue to shine brightly and achieve even greater success in their upcoming examinations and beyond. Their resilience, determination, and unwavering commitment to excellence serve as an inspiration to us all.

Henley Bank Sixth Form

There have been many exciting developments in the journey to our first Sixth Form as Henley Bank High School. Teachers have been incredibly excited when choosing the specific courses and begin reading the specifications, and they can't wait to teach them. We are really proud of the broad and academic A Level offer we will have at Henley Bank Sixth Form.

Recently, it has been a complete privilege to conduct interviews with internal and external candidates. For me, this has emphasised what I already know, that we have a brilliant cohort of potential Sixth Formers who will help us establish a fantastic Sixth Form. What especially stood out was the ambition and aspiration of our students - the desire to work hard and achieve brilliant things was clear to see.

Finally, we have had visits from contractors who are starting to get ready for the building work that will take place this year. Once this new building is available to our Sixth Form students, it will be a brilliant resource.

These are just a few of the exciting developments - we cannot wait to share more with you over the coming months.

Character Education Update

Legacy Ladder Update

Since the launch of Legacy Ladder in September, it has been an absolute joy to oversee all of the different experiences for our students. As a quick reminder, Legacy Ladder was a commitment from the school to ensure that all students had the opportunity to experience culture capital and take part in experiences outside of the classroom. The commitment extends to school trips, visiting guest speakers and Co Curricular Clubs. We will make sure that every Year Group has the opportunity to have the equivalent of 1 trip or guest speaker each term, a total of 3 experiences a year. These experiences also act as evidence towards our student’s Legacy Colours so I apologise in advance for all the additional badges you are going to need to remove from blazers to wash at the end of the year!

Year 7

In the Autumn Term, Year 7 had their trip to the Pantomime, evidence towards their Creativity badge. This term, we welcomed some visitors from Japan to come and take part in a Cultural Exchange. A group of students in Year 9 in Japan came to Henley Bank High School to perform some music for us before setting up workshops for our Year 7s to take part in. There were traditional Japanese parlour games as well as art instruction and party tricks for all of our students to enjoy. This has been a great piece of evidence for our Respect colour. In the Summer Term, we will be organising a trip to the coast for the whole group to enjoy. There will also be an MFL talk on languages in sport before some students get to play a sport in the language that they study.

Year 8

In the Autumn Term, Year 8 took part in the Gloucester History Walking Tour, learning all about the phenomenal heritage of the City they live in. We are very excited to be bringing the Royal Institute of Science to Henley Bank High School after Easter to give some practical talks to the year group before whisking them off to Birmingham for the Big Bang Fair and another museum which we are in the process of organising. All of these experiences will help earn evidence towards their Ambition and Creativity Colours.

Year 9

Year 9 also had the opportunity to take part in a cultural exchange in the Autumn Term with a visit from some older Japanese students who taught our students how to do Japanese Calligraphy, play some traditional party games and present a short lecture on what school life is like in Japan. This is evidence for their Respect Colour. This term, Year 9 were hosts to something more serious but very poignant. We welcomed a speaker from Generation 2 Generation to come and talk about their mother who was a survivor of the Holocaust, being rescued for Auschwitz after spending many years in Nazi occupied Poland. It was an incredibly emotional talk that a lot of our students were talking about many days after. This means that every single Year 9 student will receive their Respect Half Colour by the end of the year. Next term, we are going to be going to Bletchley Park, the place that Alan Turing worked during WWII when he cracked the Enigma Code.

Year 10

Year 10 hosted a talk from the Bank of England in the Autumn Term before they took part on our most ambitious project this year. In January, all of Year 10 earnt evidence towards their Ambition Colour by taking part in Careers Week. Before our Year 10s take up their Year 11 offer, we will be spending the Summer Term working on our service to the community, taking part in smaller events with invited groups coming to share in tea and biscuits with our students so that our Year 10s can learn about life in the community from different perspectives, evidence towards their Respect Colour.

College Life

This has been, by far, the tensest College Competition since its inception! Every week there has been a new leader of the pack and it has been closely run between Jenner, Holst and Dowty. I am so incredibly proud to announce that, after dominating some of the Fun Friday College competitions, Dowty were declared the winners of this term’s College Competition, narrowly beating Holst and Jenner with 2310 points! They got to enjoy an ice cream van coming to the school to give them a free ice cream with all the trimmings on Friday. Congratulations Dowty, that just leaves Hill as a College yet to win a College Competition, could they be the winners of the Summer BBQ next term? We can’t wait to find out!

This term the Eco Council at Henley Bank has been focusing on increasing space for nature across the school. As part of this we wanted to plant trees in those underloved corners of the site, cleaning our air, creating a habitat for birds and other insects, and generally adding to the beauty of our site. With the help of our eager and eco-driven students, and a few members of teaching staff willing to get muddy, we have successfully planted 35 new trees, including Alders, Beech, Willow and fruit trees. We hope they will be enjoyed by Henley Bank students for years to come.
