Holocaust - Generation to Generation Guest Speaker

On Tuesday 20th students in Year 9 and Year 10 were privileged to listen to Jeanette Marx, a speaker on behalf of Generation to Generation, to talk about her mother’s experiences during the Holocaust.

Jeanette’s speech was full of powerful anecdotes charting her mother’s experiences in the Lodz Ghetto, through to being transported to Ravensbruck Concentration Camp, and finally being transported to Sweden.

“ I enjoyed it but the story also made me sad. I learned the importance of kindness towards one another and realised how (compared to the people at the time) we are very privileged.” - Eric, Year 10

Jeanette was also able to answer some very provoking questions by our students, including how her mother’s beliefs and character changed as a result of her experiences.

Students were able to listen to first-hand recordings from Mascha, (Jeanette’s mother), which not only reminded us about the importance of freedom, difference and respect amongst us all, but also the importance of oral testimonies in how we remember the past. It is these stories which bind us as a community, and are vital in connecting the present to the future.
